HTC PAL with Flexar UHPLC Pump
HTC PAL with Flexar UHPLC Pump

Many of LEAP’s products have led analytical chemists into areas which were once not considered “main stream”. LEAP’s automation of sample injection into a GC port or LC injection valve has never been just about simple sample loading. LEAP has succeeded in the chromatography application area, because we provided chemists with flexibility in addition to extreme reliability.

LC-MS in big pharma started with many labs needing a large capacity of microtiter plates. Today’s market understands the value of reliability when running a large batch of precious samples overnight. Keeping samples covered and cooled until being analyzed has become a standard requirement when biological samples are handled. Fraction collection for profiling amongst candidate compounds or for production-purification has become a hot topic lately.

LEAP strives to provide more convenience by introducing new software which integrates components such as Mass Specs, LC pumps and robotic autosamplers, or GC and GC/MS systems with dual armed robots that inject and prep samples by means of extraction devices such as SPME fibers, SPE plates, filter plates, liquid-liquid reactions/extractions or headspace gases.

Robotics in the GC lab is successful with Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) techniques. Pals are also offered as dual head/syringe systems to perform “just-in-time” SPE or filtrations. Just in time preparation means time savings and simplicity. The raw sample can be placed into a PAL tray and all the steps will be performed not just the injection of the prepared sample. Less refrigeration space is needed and no unwanted degradation of the extract can alter the ultimate analytical result.

Four years ago we introduced nano-flow pumps and micro- and nano-volume spraying and printing that can be assisted by machine vision. These products are now part of our product group Proteomics.

We do not shy away from challenging automation tasks - we embrace them! Our Customized Solutions product segment is our fastest growing business. We believe that the best results are achieved when we work together with our customers as a team. This is true for small labs, large labs, and analytical instrument companies.

PAL MALDI Option

Rapid and accurate identification and quantification of proteins is one of the goals of today’s proteomics research. The challenge is to achieve high sensitivity with limited sample amount. The micro fraction collection/MALDI spotting option meets this task. It is an ideal tool for single or multidimensional chromatographic separation of complex peptide and protein mixtures for subsequent analysis by MALDI and/or ESI mass spectrometry. It offers flexible LC/MALDI spotting on various target types from different vendors as well as fraction collection into 96 or 384 well plates. Precise probe positioning control enables reproducible and robust collection of small fraction volumes from nl to the μl range. LC separations coupled with micro fraction collection No dead volume, column outlet directly attached to the spotting tip.

PAL Dilutor

Adding the Dilutor to a PAL extends it’s sample prep capabilities. It can be used to dispense liquid prior sample injection and combines the “add liquid” and “inject” steps without user intervention or syringe change. Typical applications are dilutions, derivatizations, sample spiking or standard additions. Dilutor syringes up to 10ml ensure large dilution ratios. Another important Dilutor application concerns the injection valve and syringe wash procedure in LC- MS high throughput systems. Replacing the standard Fast Wash Station, the Dilutor can be used to clean the injection syringe as well as the injection valve at the same time. This results in shorter cycle times, which is the key factor in today’s screening labs.

  • Sample derivatization, dilutions, spiking, standard additions Large dispense volume combined with small injection volume
  • Accelerated wash steps, cleans syringe and valve at the same time
  • Technology developed for the most sensitive LC-MS Systems

4x Ultra - UHPLC Pump

Ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) is a category of liquid chromatography where pressures up to 15,000psi (1000 bar) are used. Researchers benefit from increased resolution, speed, and sensitivity in a variety of applications. These advantages result from packing columns with < 2.0 μm particles and HPLC instrumentation that are optimized for such conditions. In order to take advantage of this new technology, samples are introduced via ultra high pressure injection valves into the corresponding UPLC chromatography system.

  • All PAL HPLC sample loaders can be equipped with injection valves built for pressures up to 15,000psi (1000 bar).
  • Ultra high pressure valves up to 15,000psi (1000 bar) 6 - or 10-port design available.
  • Various bore sizes for nano- and micro applications

3x Ti - HPLC Triple Range Pump

Three flow ranges can be covered with this one high performance LC pump. All bio-compatible wetted surfaces with durability and ease-of-integration make this an ideal workhorse pump for the LC-MS environment. Teamed with the LEAP PAL the modularity is ideal for a growing laboratory.

Chorus 220 – Splitless NanoLC Pump

The Chorus 220 solvent delivery system achieves precise, pulseless fluid delivery at flow rates as low as 200nl/min. True nanoliter solvent delivery without flow splitting often used in conventional low flow LC pumps. This approach avoids unintentional changes in flow rate due to split ratio fluctuations caused by e.g. increased column resistance or viscosity changes during gradient formation. Furthermore splitless operation results in a real reduction of solvent consumption without recycling costs.

LEAP’s GC Products

COMBI PAL

Performs injections into GCs as liquids or generates head space gas extractions in an agitator/heater combination before gas injections. Loading vials into the incubator is precisely timed that all samples experience the exact same incubation time and the preparation step is completely synchronized with the injection and analysis time. The

result is a highest possible throughput and exactly reproduced prep steps for each sample.

A very popular option is the SPME fiber for solvent-less extractions and the barcode option. Also popular are microtiter plates from where all PALs can sample.

New software developed by LEAP called LEAP Shell 3 is integrating each COMBI with data systems like ChemStationTM and XcaliburTM.

DI PAL

This PAL has the same platform as the COMBI but does not include the necessary hardware and software to perform headspace extractions. But it offers an upgrade path to a full fledged COMBI. It is popular with customers that have at present no need for the headspace option but would like to preserve an upgrade path to it. Liquid injections with all the robotic capabilities as the COMBI offers are in place.

GC PAL

Is a robotic autosampler for liquid handling and GC injections without the capability to upgrade to headspace extractions other than for ambient temperature. It is very popular for labs that want to sample out of microtiter plates, make dilutions on the fly or have barcode capability added. Other applications are monitoring applications where single or multiple liquid streams need to be monitored (add flow cell or flow vial rack). Synchronization as with all GC related robotic PALs can be accomplished with LEAP’s own Shell 3 software that interfaces with ChemStationTM and XcaliburTM.

Twin PAL for GCs

Two XYZs and two syringes or other tools enable a Twin PAL to be a extremely versatile robotic sampling and liquid handling device. The most popular combinations are Head Space-SPME and liquid sample injection techniques. With LEAP Shell 3 together an overnight run can handle a batch of samples to be analyzed by headspace extraction/injection followed by a batch of liquid sample GC samples or direct headspace gas extraction and injection. The Shell 3 software handles a Twin and a GC or GC-MS as one system from one sample list.

ITEK

This extraction device applies a BTEX packed upper syringe needle portion that is temperature controlled for thermally desorbing trapped material. The syringe can similar as in purge and trap extracts headspace gases from vials and capture them on the solid phase. Other custom packings can be designed and provided.

SPE Drawer System

A unique drawer concept allows a robotic approach to filtration and SPE in 96-well plates or small cartridges in a microwell format.

Liquid-Liquid Extractions

It seems something from the past but in some application areas extractions with specific solvents or series of various solvents seem still be the state of the art (e.g. polymer formulation and key component analysis or for plant materials).
